Dont Studies and Caprices Opus 35 for Viola (Schott)

transcribed for viola by Max Rostal

with preparatory exercises by Max Rostal

Jakob Dont (March 2, 1815 to Nov 17, 1888) was an Austrian violinist, composer and teacher.  He was a student of Josef Bohm and Georg Hellmesberger.  He became a member of the Hofburgtheater orchestra at the age of sixteen and in 1824 entered service at the Vienna Hofkapell.  He appeared often as a soloist during this time.  He chose against a career as a soloist despite his success.  He became a professor at the Padagogisches Institut in Vienna and was also employed at the Wiener Konservatorium.  He eventually left the latter position as he was forbidden from using his own compositions for teaching.  Most of his compositions consist of innovative teaching material.  His 24 Etudes and Caprices Gradus ad parnassum Op. 35 are considered some of the most important technical studies for the violin. Leopald Auer was amongst his students.
