The violin has been crafted upon the "G" (Grande) pattern of the Cremonese maker Antonio Stradvari.

The European Maple back has a strong, narrow flame that descends from the centre joint.  The ribs and the scroll are of the same maple. About Ian Clarke

During the mid 1970s, Ian Clarke trained in violin making at the Newark School of Violin Making in England.  He had several teachers there: Maurice Bouette- the first director of the school,  Glen Collins-  Bouette’s assisant, and Wilfred Sounders.

While still a student,  Ian entered the Cremona Trienniale violin making competition.  Ian was awarded a silver medal for his violin.  On his graduation from the school in 1977,  Ian received a Diploma with Distinction and along with Michael Byrd shared the Ralph Oakham Cup which is awarded for excellence over the three years of the course.

Ian stayed in England for the next four years, and spent his time concentrating on violin making,  collecting timber and research.

Ian returned to the family property at Biddeston near Toowoomba in 1981.  He established his workshop there and an extensive plantation of trees.  He also ran courses in violin making in Toowoomba and Brisbane in the early 1980s.

He returned to the UK and Europe in 1987 mainly to source more maple for his instruments.  He also visited as many violin makers as possible.  This included a trip to Prague to meet the respected maker Premyst Spidlen.

Ian continues to work from his property "Bundara" in Biddeston.
