    Product Description

The scroll of this Vuillame- Honore Derazey violin has been carved to honour Gaspard Duiffopruggar.  Duiffopruggar was born around 1514 in Bavaria into a large family of stringed instrument makers that was also known by the names Tieffenbrucker, Dieffopruchar and Duiffogrugcar.  One branch of the family settled in Lyon, France and another branch settled in Italy.  Original Duiffopruggars are extremely rare. Duiffopruggar is thought to be the originator of the first violin. He was also the teacher of Gasparo de Salo- one of the earliest violin makers.

JB Vuillame was one of the most successful violin dealers and makers of mid 19th century Paris.  He is believed to have owned one of Diuffopruggars instruments.  Many of the worlds greatest collectors wished to buy this violin.  Vuillame said that he was unable to part with the violin, but he would make copies of it.   Vuillame hired Honoré Derazey, a Mirecourt luthier, to work on these instruments. These instrument with their ornate carving and inlays became famous and sought after all over Europe.

This violin also carries a small label "Vuillaume". It was made around 1830 in France, in the tradition of French lutherie.  It may be of the school of Vuillame.  It has a tone that is deep, rich and velvety.  The workmanship evident in the scroll and the inlay and remarkable.  It is inscribed with a traditional Latin phrase:

“ I was alive in the woods- dead I sing to God sweetly”

This phrase refers to how the wood the violin was made from was once part of a living tree and how it now is played to create sweet music. This phrase has been carved into instruments since ancient times.
