He began composing at an early age. His orchestral work, Loki, was performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra as part of ASME XI in 1997. This was as a part of the Australian Society of Music Education’s Young Composer project for young composers up to Year 12.
His work, Hora emisfera sudica, had its premiere with the Camarata Of St Johns at the 2013 Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music. Another compostion Breaza a la Camerata was played at the Queensland Music Festival in 2015. Breaze a la Camerata is a gyspy piece that is dedicated to Camerata St John’s and is a nod to the Roumanian ‘breaza’ style. In 2009, he was the set-piece composer for Prestige Music’s Music Fest (a school competition for music ensembles). He composed the string arrangements for the television music competition “the Voice” in 2015. Michael has composed for both string orchestra and string quartet and many of his compositions are suitable for performance by school ensembles.
He began his tertiary studies with a Bachelor of Music at the University of Queensland in 1995. He later graduated with a Master of Philosophy in Music where the topic of his research was the influence of Romanian folk music on the compositions of George Enescu. He has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning.
As a violinist and violist, Michael has performed professionally across a wide range of musical genres and a variety of ensembles. These include performances with the North Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Virtuosi, and Ensemble 1. He has been a soloist and regular member of the Camerata of St Johns since 2007. He has also been a co-musical director for Camarata. He has been a guest violist with Topology since 2007.
He is also currently a member of the Sanctuary String Quartet. Demonstrating his versatility, Michael has also performed with gypsy-style band Doch and the Doch Gypsy Orchestra which he co-founded. Doch was influenced by the rich musical heritage of the Balkan countries such as Romania. His performance experience with Doch tied into his post-graduate studies in Romanian Folk music at UQ. He has been composer and violist for jazz string quartet Bluehaze and he played violin with Shenzo’s Electric Stunt Orchstra and gypsy jazz band Laique.
Michael has been a teacher of strings and ensemble director at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. He has also taught strings at Brisbane Boys Grammar School, and St Lawrences College in South Brisbane. He was the Australian String Associations Tasmanian president in 2011. He has lectured in Music Technology at the University of Queensland from 2003 to 2013 and was a contemporary violin teacher at the University of Tasmania in 2011. He taught violin and viola at QUT in 2007 and 2008.
