Stephen was a founding member of the Sydney Youth Orchestra. His enthusiasm and interest in music led to him to undertake further studies in music at the University of Sydney. He had formal training in violin with John Harding and composition with Peter Sculthorpe. He has performed with ensembles such as the ABC Sinfonia, the Darlington Baroque Players (directed by Winsome Evans), the Badinerie Players, the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland Pops Orchestra. Stephen performs regularly with several professional chamber ensembles.
In 1997, Stephen completed the Master of Music course at the Queensland Conservatorium of music specialising in violin performance and pedagogy. In 1999, he was also appointed an examiner for the AMEB. He has adjudicated at various eisteddfods and competitions on numerous occasions. He is also in demand as a string and orchestral clinician and has conducted a number of workshops and festivals including the Queensland Festival of Music, the Western Australian Schools Orchestra Festival, the Hobart Eisteddfod and the Gold Coast Eisteddfod. In 2011, Stephen conducted the All State senior orchestra in New Mexico in a performance of Pictures at an Exhibition and Peter Sculthorpe’s Oceana.
Stephen is currently Principal String Teacher and Director of Orchestras at Brisbane Grammar School, lectures at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Griffith University), is State President for the Australian String Teachers’ Association Queensland and directs the BEL Ensemble at The University of Queensland.
